Position Overview

Our Software Engineers are product focused, giving them the opportunity to work on a product and understand the layers of the software stack. Work includes documentation, automated testing, debugging, working with algorithms and data structures, coding, design, system performance scaling, and problem solving for routine and basic software programs. Responsibilities also include participation in projects.

THE ROLE

The Backend Systems Engineer is responsible for working on multiple backends, including development, optimization and maintenance. This includes critical platform APIs and integrations with third-party systems (using PHP and Python), backend crons (Python), and database optimization and query writing (MySQL).

This is a hands-on position that requires first-hand code development and has the potential, over time, to grow into a Manager-level position managing other developers as the backend development needs of the business grow.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Looking for a candidate with many, if not all of the following…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • 3-5 years product development experience

  • Strong Python 3 experience

  • Knowledge or a strong desire to learn about development with micro-services is a plus

  • Strong SQL query skills

  • Experience with MySQL

  • Experience with ORMs as well as direct SQL

  • Experience with table and query optimization through indexes and views

  • Experience with data integrity through foreign keys

  • Familiar with creation and use of stored procedures, scheduled procedures, and triggers

  • Ideally, familiarity with AWS-based database (Aurora) implementations and configuration optimization

  • General development experience/familiarity in the following languages and frameworks: PHP, Node.js/Express.js, HTML, Less, AngularJS, React

  • Understands the components involved in general platform architecture:

  • Processing & scaling, file & data storage, logging, caching, load balancing, Message queue, firewalls & VPN, port routing, DNS

  • Understands the concepts of server-based as well as server-less system Architecture and deployment

  • Familiar with queuing systems like RabbitMQ and/or Amazon's SQS

  • General hands on experience with AWS services like: EC2, S3, DynamoDb, RDS, SQS, SNS, CloudSearch, Beanstalk, Lambda, ElastiCache, Route 53

  • Comfortable sharing a single code base

  • Experience with code repositories like Git

  • Comfortable working in an agile development environment; experience using Jira in a Kanban workflow is an asset
